A contact's last seen was showing fine yesterday, and today it's gone. It's a common and slightly alarming moment — but the explanations are mostly mundane. Here are the six most common reasons last seen disappears on WhatsApp, and how to narrow down which one applies.
1. Privacy settings changed
The most frequent cause. WhatsApp lets users choose who sees their last seen (Everyone / My Contacts / Nobody). If the contact flipped it to nobody, or to "My Contacts" while your number isn't saved in their phone, last seen vanishes for you while the rest of the chat looks entirely normal.
2. You've been blocked
If you've been blocked, last seen usually disappears alongside other signs — their profile picture and About text may also go blank, your messages stop getting the second (blue) read tick, and calls won't go through. A missing last seen on its own rarely means a block; a cluster of missing signals does.
3. The reciprocity rule kicked in
WhatsApp applies last seen reciprocally: if you have hidden your own last seen, you can't see anyone else's either. Before assuming the contact changed something, open your own privacy settings and check whether your last seen is hidden — that alone would hide theirs from you.
4. Account deactivated or number changed
If the contact deactivated WhatsApp, switched numbers, or deleted their account, the chat may show no last seen and message ticks may stay on a single grey tick. This one is usually accompanied by a missing or default profile picture.
5. Temporary glitch or app update
Occasionally last seen disappears because of a transient issue — an app update, a sync delay, or a cached display bug. If it reappears within a few hours, a glitch was almost certainly the culprit rather than any deliberate change.
6. They're active right now
A subtler one: while a contact is actively using WhatsApp, their "last seen" timestamp pauses and shows "online" instead of a timestamp. Last seen updates again only when they go offline. So a momentarily missing timestamp can simply mean they're using the app at that instant.
