What Does It Mean When Someone's Last Seen Is Hidden on WhatsApp?
When a contact's "last seen" timestamp vanishes on WhatsApp, it's natural to jump to conclusions — most commonly that you've been blocked. In reality, last seen can be hidden for several reasons, and a block is only one of them.
What does "last seen hidden" actually mean?
It means you can no longer see the timestamp that tells you when a contact was last active on WhatsApp. WhatsApp still has the data; it's just no longer shown to you. The cause is almost always a privacy choice — either theirs or, surprisingly, yours — rather than something permanently wrong with the account.
Reason 1: they changed their privacy settings
The most common cause. WhatsApp lets every user choose who can see their last seen (Everyone, My Contacts, or Nobody). If a contact switches to "Nobody," or to "My Contacts" when you're not saved as a contact, their last seen disappears for you overnight — even though everything else about the chat looks normal.
Reason 2: you've been blocked
Blocking is the reason people worry about, but it's far from the only one. If you've been blocked, last seen usually disappears alongside other signs: their profile picture and About text may vanish, your messages stop showing the second blue tick, and calls won't connect. If only last seen is gone, a block is less likely.
Reason 3: your own last seen is hidden
This is the rule people forget. WhatsApp applies last seen reciprocally — if you've hidden your own last seen, you can't see anyone else's either. So before assuming the contact did something, check your own privacy settings: it may be that you are the one hiding last seen, which hides it from you in return.
How can you tell which one applies?
Work through the other profile signals: if the contact's profile picture, About text, and message delivery ticks all look normal, it's almost certainly a privacy setting (theirs or yours). If several signals disappeared at once and your messages sit on a single grey tick, that points more toward a block.
Can you still track someone with hidden last seen?
You can't reveal a hidden last seen timestamp — if WhatsApp isn't showing it, no tool can display it. But "online" is a separate signal from "last seen": as long as the contact's online visibility isn't also hidden from you, they still show as "online" the moment they open WhatsApp, so a tool like Last Seen Monitor can still send you an online alert whenever they appear online. The exception is WhatsApp's "who can see when I'm online" setting — by default it matches the last-seen setting, so a contact who has hidden last seen from you may also be hidden from you online, in which case no tool can detect them either
